Current Needs
Spring Semester UPDATE
Mirebalais, the closest city just a couple miles from Ecole Destined for Grace and approximately 30 miles northeast of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, has recently experienced significant turmoil due to gang-related violence. On March 31, heavily armed gang members attacked the town, seizing control of a local prison and freeing over 500 inmates. This coordinated assault led to the burning of several houses and vehicles, resulting in numerous casualties and prompting many residents to flee to neighboring towns. At this current time, most of Ecole Destined for Grace students and staff have fled the area to stay with friends or family living in other regions of Haiti.
The impact on local institutions has been profound. Ecole Destined for Grace, a school dedicated to providing education to underprivileged children in Mirebalais, has been directly affected. The recent violence has disrupted the school’s operations, leading to its temporary closure. However, the organization remains committed to its mission of offering education, meals, and a safe environment to children in need. They continue to monitor the situation closely and are in regular communication with local community leaders to assess when it will be safe to reopen the school.
The current situation in Mirebalais highlights the urgent need for continued support and prayers for the safety of the community and the restoration of peace. Ecole Destined for Grace remains steadfast in its commitment to the children of Haiti, adapting to the evolving circumstances to ensure that education and hope continue to prevail.
We will keep you updated as the situation unfolds.
